I'm not sure how many of these are open source, but I use FileZilla, IrfanView, Audacity, Firefox, Juice, 7zip, Openfire, Spark, for a few.

I agree that Linux is a viable alternative in many scenarios, but we can't simply gloss over the differences. While a primary or middle schooler may not notice the difference, high school students will. There is no Microsoft Office for Linux and while OpenOffice is similar the differences are pronounced enough. Linux boxes make great replacements where the primary purpose is web browsing, educational applications, and the like...but don't expect kids not to notice when they boot up OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. I'm not suggesting that moving to Linux - even for applications like OpenOffice is a bad thing, in fact I use OpenOffice...But we cannot simply install these systems and expect the transition to be transparent. There will be training requirements for both faculty and students.

I love this idea...though it is somewhat competitive with IN. I think it has a great future and we are working on some similar features for IN. However, we don't want to become a full-featured RSS reader b/c then we enter competition with Google Reader, et al. Rather we'll be looking for ways to offer some of the benefits without the whole package and integrating with third party services as well.

I have to agree with Lardinois on this one - suing StudiVZ will not win Facebook any friends in Germany. If they had nailed the company when it was small - sure, but you let it last as long as it has and its almost like saying, "Sure, go ahead, we don't care."

Seems Lasars admits in this post Ubuntu is their largest competition. I remember a few years ago it seemed like everyone was talking about SUSE - now the hype is all Ubuntu.

I've used Miva several times over the years. Most recently however they turned down most of my requested search terms - something that befuddled me as they were accepted everywhere else...Anyways, an acquisition makes sense.

yeah, a lot of the problem is just that people are ingrained with OpenOffice...its hard to convince them to switch...and compatibility isn't perfect. if you are writing school papers it usually works fine - but excel spreadsheet calculations - well its a bit of a gamble.

Openoffice is a great app, $1B seems a huge amount to create a perception to the consumer, if it's free then surely that will be half of the job done, (MS Office)$150 v free.

I've never really needed to copy a file while I'm logged in. If I am doing web work or programming I normally leave an SCP and SSH window both up.

I couldn't agree more. As a computer student I tryed to learn ways of protecting computers from hacking. But it wasn't until I learn how to do the hack, could I begin to figure out how to stop it.

While it is certain that certain students utilize these skills for evil, one can't combat malware without being intimately familiar with how it works.
