New search engine takes aim at Google
A very nice additional from Google. While I don't really use a Gmail account - this feature should become standard across email providers.

Smart move on Sony's part. They are losing the battle to Amazon's Kindle, but moving to an open standard will help them...though it won't be enough. They need to step up their game significantly.

I must say I am a bit shocked. Microsoft giving Apache cash? Isn't that a little like Microsoft giving Apple cash? The Apache Web Server is Microsoft's largest web server competitor!

@Bink - You can, but they charge like $40/mo. now for that service. @vogel - Have you purchased the set top box yet? I'm holding out till finances are a bit better...but on my list!

Netflix ups outlook; Customer acquisition costs fall
Me and the wife dropped Blockbuster a few months ago because they raised rates and limited the amount of times you could return/pick up in their stores. We didn't want the hassle of having to record when we returned movies to stores. Netflix also had a quicker roundtime when returning movies and has that cool new set top box!

I still think I'd go with Blockbuster since you can return in store and pick up another in its place.

This is exciting news. I love when applications move modular. It is so much better to have an extensible application rather than one that is a large single mass of code. This not only increases performance but it also reduces surface area for attacks.

Netflix is amazing. This set-top box is the bomb (though its on my wishlist). Somebody better come out of the woodwork or Netflix will have a monopoly on digital distribution within 2-3 years.

Netflix ups outlook; Customer acquisition costs fall
Sometimes I wish I could understand the operations of mega-corporations. I look at them and scratch my head. In-store kiosks? Digital downloads is the way of the future. Even Netflix has been much slower on the uptake than they should be...But Blockbuster - look at them. A set-top box for $100 and already thousands of tv and movies available for instant streaming. Blockbuster's death knell is ringing, if they can't get on top of this market and fast. I'm confused as to their strategy.

I read an article I think on cnn.com or somewhere similar that said girls are on par with boys as far as math testing goes.

Cool, a new way to waste my time. Though I'm sure IN would rather me edit new articles. It looks similar to all the new iphone physics games.

The ability to access the drive is I think different from how the OS uses that drive. For instance about a year ago there was a lot of concern of using Ubuntu on laptops because it really causes them to seek a lot of data and will 1) shorten your drive life and 2) use up your battery quickly. Would you say the laptop manufacturer should have a special driver for Ubuntu to pass off the extra seeks into a special onboard ram? Or would you say Ubuntu should just adjust how it uses the drive because it is not using it optimally as an OS? I think the same applies to Microsoft. SSDs have a different set of rules and should be accessed using different methods than hard drives.

Windows Vista hurting SSD deployment, claims SanDisk CEO
Must say I don't feel this way. My hypothesis is that as economies weaken or strengthen there is a need for IT personnel. When they weaken it is b/c companies begin looking to squeeze efficiencies out of their processes - and this is oftentimes best handled by a knowledgeable IT person.

Interesting article. Cell phones are great - but I'll consider purchasing a headset and am using Skype on my PC a lot more now that the laptop has a built-in microphone.

This has been a concern and a subject of research among many physicians for quite a few years now. I have followed Dr. Mercola's concerns over this issue for years and unfortunately believe that Dr. Herberman's hypotheses will be proven true in the future. Cell phones are a wonderful entity, but I personally believe it is wise to limit their use and to use headsets and other preventive measures to avoid overexposure and the potential health risks. We feel invincible, but we are not, and as the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
