CAPTCHA’s Can Be Useful, Don’tcha Know
When attempting to digitalize old books sometimes the OCR software has a difficult time deciphering old, faded text. Luis von Ahn is an assistant professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University who helped develop the CAPTCHA technology. He ingeniously has developed a system whereby one of the words that needs to be deciphered is used as part of the security words that must be typed to get into sites like Craigslist and TicketMaster. Once enough people agree on what the word in question is, that information is accepted into the database for the digitalization program.

I really like CAPTCHA's slogan - Stop spam, read books. :-)
