Interesting to see that Dell’s answer to the ASUS Eee PC will ship with a choice of either Windows XP or Ubuntu 8.04.

Dell Inspiron 910 customers can choose between XP and UbuntuThe Dell Inspiron 910 sounds like an interesting machine, and I have to admit that it’s the first Dell machine that I’ve seen in a long time that, given the specs, I’m seriously considering buying when it’s released. I like the concept of the Eee PC a lot but I’m not that thrilled with the Xandros OS that’s installed as standard on the Linux version. I know I could install Ubuntu on the Eee as an afterthought, but to be honest that’s too much hassle for me (and there are some known issues that would annoy me). Dual boot might be sweet …

There’s a lot to like about the Inspiron 910 - the 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU is a beaut, it comes fitted with 512MB or 1GB or memory, has a sweet looking 8.9″ WLED screen running at 1024 x 600, three USB ports, a LAN port, decent audio and storage options ranging from 4GB to 16GB (4GB feels a little on the tight side to me, I think I’d go with 8GB as a minimum). It feels to me like the spec falls into the sweet spot in terms of spec. The Eee PC has evolved a lot since it was released but I feel that the product is now diluted by having too many models.

Rumors have it that the system will go on sale on August 22nd and the starting price is rumored to be $299. At that price, it’s a winner.
